BHPS 2016!

The Black Hills Photo Shootout is a photography festival which brings photographers from across the country to South Dakota for photography, education, sightseeing, camaraderie, and fun.  The event showcases the natural beauty of South Dakota along with the photography expertise of highly respected professional photographers.  The Shootout is organized and managed by Outdoor Photo Workshops (OPW) in conjunction with numerous photography professionals.  With this partnership, we are able to mesh the expertise of instructors who have a variety of photography backgrounds with the expertise of a professional photography workshop and tour leader to create a fun and educational photography festival.

The first question we often get, and you may even be asking, is, ‚ÄúSo, why South Dakota?‚ÄĚ The Black Hills area of South Dakota is one of North America‚Äôs hidden gem‚Äôs for outdoor and nature photography, abounding in wildlife, beautiful scenery, and ¬†imagery of the old and new west. ¬†While we really thought about keeping this photography treasure all to ourselves and our cameras, instead we have developed the Black Hills Photo Shootout. Through this event we are able to showcase the beauty and diversity the area has to offer both visitors and residents while providing attendees a great weekend packed full of informative workshops, great networking opportunities, unbelievable outdoor photography subjects, and most of all, fun!

How can I get an awesome 2016 Shootout t-shirt? You can order your discounted Shootout t-shirt during registration.  As long as you order your shirt prior to September 1st, you can pick it up at check-in on Friday night with no shipping charges.  There will be an extremely limited number of shirts available at the event, so if you want one, you will need to pre-order it when you register for the event.  After the date we place the order, if there are extra shirts available, they will be listed on the website, so if it allows you to place the order, you will receive the shirt.  Photo Shootout hats are also available in 3 colors!

Where will classes be held? The Black Hills State University in Spearfish will be our main hub for the Shootout, where all events will be held or leave from. Outdoor sessions vary in distance from Black Hills State University from being right around the corner up to an hour away, depending on location.  We promise they will be worth the drive though!

Where should I stay?¬† The 2016 Shootout will be based around Spearfish, South Dakota¬†in the northern Black Hills, so you will want to look for lodging near there. ¬†The Black Hills does cover a good sized area, so you should check driving times between locations. Here’s a starting point for hotel and lodging reservations in the Black Hills.

  • We have a block of discounted rooms reserved at the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott – Spearfish¬†which is down¬†the street from BHSU¬†(where all events will be held or leave from).
  • Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott – Spearfish – 2720 1st Ave. E, Spearfish, SD 57783, (605) 642-3500
  • The discounted rate for Photo Shootout participants is $85 for a 2¬†queen or 1 king room. ¬†When you call, tell them you would like a¬†room listed under the Black Hills¬†Photo Shootout for the special rate.
  • Breakfast is included at no charge and they will have cold breakfast available at 4:30am for us on Saturday and Sunday mornings and will start the hot breakfast at 6:30am.

What airport should I fly in to? Rapid City (RAP) is the closest airport which is just over an hour away.

Is transportation provided? No, participants are expected to provide their own transportation. However, each workshop meets up with the rest of their group in the parking lot at BHSU and carpools from there. For some workshops, participants might be encouraged or required to carpool due to limited parked, vehicle entrance fees, and to save gas. Participants should be aware of travel times between areas. We will provide directions for each of the workshop locations upon check-in.

What should I bring with me to the Shootout? Here is a link to a suggested pack list for the Shootout.  Please keep in mind that each workshop is different, so you will want to make sure you have the appropriate gear and clothing for the workshops you have registered for and that you keep an eye on the weather before heading out.

Meeting Expectations Our goal is to meet (and hopefully exceed!) your expectations during the Photo Shootout.  After every event we send out an evaluation.  We want honest feedback on what we are doing great on so we can continue and what we need to work on to make the event even better.  For that reason, if there is ANYTHING that is not meeting your expectations DURING your workshop, please talk with an instructor RIGHT THEN…don’t wait for the evaluation, it is too late for us to do anything about it then.  If you tell us during the workshop, we are going to do our darndest to make things right.  We want honest answers on the evaluation, but if we take care of everything during the event, the evaluation can be fantastic and still be honest!

Can I take 2 workshops in Session 1 and/or Session 3 if one of them is a nighttime photography workshop since it will be done before the other workshops in that session start? We have had several people ask if they could take one of the nighttime photo workshops along with a regular morning workshop, so basically 2 workshops in one session since the times are different enough. You asked for it… you got it!

Two workshops in one session applies only if you are interested in:

‚ÄĘ Session 1, Saturday Morning: Lighting Up the Night: Light Painting for Night Photography PLUS ANOTHER Session 1, Saturday Morning workshop.
‚ÄĘ Session 3, Sunday Morning: Photography After Dark: Night Skies and the Blue Hour PLUS ANOTHER Session 3, Sunday Morning workshop.

If you would like to take one of the workshops listed above along with any other workshop during the same session (which would start after the nighttime workshops have ended), you can do so in either or both sessions for $40 for each additional workshop. There must still be space available in any workshop you want to add.

Please keep in mind that you will be coming back from the night workshop and in many cases going directly to meet the group for your next morning workshop. The nightime workshops will go from approximately 2:00-5:00am (exact times will be listed in the event program). Yes… we will make sure you have time for a quick potty break, but you may want to bring breakfast or a snack with you.

If you have already registered for a workshop and want to add a workshop, you can go to the link below and add the workshop you haven’t signed up for already and we will add it to your schedule. This will only work if you are interested in taking one of the night photography workshops as all other workshops will overlap with other workshops in that session except these.

If you haven’t registered at all for the Photo Shootout, you will need to go through the regular registration process first, then to add either or both of the additional workshops in Session 1 or 3 (remember, one MUST be a nighttime workshop), prior to checking out, copy the link(s) below into your browser and add it to your cart with your registration. If you want to add an extra workshop in both sessions, click one link, add it to your cart, then come back to this and copy the second link and add it to your cart.

What will the weather be like?  It can be many things. But for the norm that time of year will be sunny and dry during the days Рhighs in the 50-60s. At night, cool to cold in the higher elevations. However, we can have a heat wave or even snow that time of year, so check the forecasts before you pack!  We always recommend dressing in layers that you can add or remove as the weather changes throughout the day.

What is the Registration Deadline? We don’t have a deadline for the event as long as we still have workshops available. ¬†However, there may be earlier deadlines for things like special events and t-shirts. ¬†While there is not a registration deadline, please understand that we do have to print things like nametags 1-2 weeks before the event, so if you register after they are printed, your nametag will be handwritten (with fair warning that I have terrible handwriting!) When will the 2017 Black Hills Photo Shootout be? September 29-October 1, 2017!

Are there any other Photo Shootouts in other areas? The Tampa Bay Photo Shootout will be in February 2017 in Tampa Bay, Florida.  We hope to see you there!w
